OK, Alan,
Based on "We don't all have to agree." I am going to disagree with you.''
I don't know why I am disagreeing. I don't have any reason. But you said I could.

Oh, hey Alan. I just had a great idea.
Remember that meme from a while ago - Pic of a guy running through his house laden with a big sandwich and a whole pot of coffee - The caption is - "There is this guy on the internet, AND HE'S WRONG!"
You and I could have an argument. We could challenge each other. We would agree to meet on neutral ground.
Two old guys - in skirts - dukeing in out.
I'll bet people would pay money for that.
We could have our own reality TV show.

For sure this is true, but Scotland decided to put the entire infantry of the nation into kilts, with the formation of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Just as Highland Dress is the traditional dress of only one region of Scotland but has become the symbol of Scottishness to outsiders, Western Wear (as we call it) is the dress of the Southwestern rancher or cowboy, yet symbolises the Yank to the outside world. (Yank too refers to only a tiny fraction of Americans, people who wouldn't be caught dead in Western Wear, BTW.)
Native Americans wear t-shirts and jeans like everybody else.

Hey, if we're going to have a reality show, it needs to have Kim Kardashian in it.
...For plot interest. Maybe she'll wear tartan.

Na, I would prefer the girl from the Lochcarron site. She already wears Tartan. In fact there is almost enough fabric, that if you squint just right, you can just make out a full Sett.

Not quite, As part of yet more cuts to the British Army, the BRITISH government decided to put to put the entire Royal Regiment of Scotland, a division of the British Army into Kilts for Parade Dress, most of the rest of the time, they are in trousers or combat trousers.
The "English and Welsh", the Irish and Scots Guards Regiments, and the not nationally ascribed Regiments of the British Army" are in trousers. ( I'm not sure what all of the Royal Irish Regiment wear, though most, I believe, are In trousers all the time)
And there of course there are some Native Americans who do wear their traditional dress.... For their special occasions, as explained to me by some that came to the UK on a tour, pity I wasn't wearing a kilt at the time...
To the military people yes I know I've probably used the term "Division" incorrectly in the military sense.

Just so you know. You------and many others------- "imagine" quite incorrectly. Some Scots, particularly Highlanders do not understand this idea of honouring ones ancestors and the rest, by those outwith Scotland wearing the kilt and so on and yes, they really do think you are just playing at being a Scot. They, the Scots, like everyone else have "roots" from the world over and remember them with just as much pride but in a different way with dignity, quietly and with no fuss. Also, please remember most Scots are not members on a website such as this so they have no opportunity to see, never mind understand, the other point of view.

I disagree Jock, while in the Highlands it is quite common to see native born Highland Scots celebrating their heritage with National Dress. Pakistani, Indian, Greek, German, French, The Scandinavian countries, Russian, Indonesian, African of about three different types. You can see individuals and whole families. You can see celebrations of heritage in food, (Tika Masala is now the National Dish of Scotland, according to Frommers it is ordered and served more than any other menu item) dance, music and dress.
Celebrating your roots, where you come from, would be sort of odd if you never left. So the kilt - not so much. Everywhere else in the world however, those of Scottish descent celebrate where they come from.
