From my experience on here and in the real world [albeit Navy vice AF] wearing the kilt with a uniform mess dress jacket is acceptable in all branches of the US Military. It may not be explicitly in the regulations but it is seen as an acceptible variation.
To the main point of the thread I agree that a heavily metaled [que Nighthawk with some spiked metal sporran that doubles as a mace head  ] leather sporran will work nicely in lieu of a fur one.
