I attended a Creation Con around 1993 in San Jose, CA. Suited up as a member of "Starfleet Marine Highlanders (Cochrane's Own)"--kilt, black leather sporran, gold-braided Starfleet Next Gen shirt, and a kilt belt I modded with a Starfleet insignia.
Didn't have a Cochrane tartan kilt, though.
Got a lot of pics, and a smiling nod from Patrick Stewart. :-D
Since I'm a McMahon on my mother's side, I'm probably a descendant of Brian Boru so make that an O'Brien clan crest kilt pin and hold the shamrock pin. And instead of 4 pips on the collar, 4 shamrock pins.
Did you get to Dragon.Con and did you get any pics? Just a few suggestions to pimp out what you have: a big combadge, a white rollneck sweater ala TWOK, a Star Trek TOS belt buckle (not the belt from Hong Kong, the oval two-tone buckle from Amazon), a Vulcan IDIC pin or one of those lightning bolt kilt pins, and a pair of matching red hose (now that they make them) or rugby socks but with no flashes. Ditch the wooden walking stick for an aluminum walking staff. For a sgian dubh use a regimental sgian dubh in black and silver or a chrome handled boisdale or one of the inexpensive open lattice hilt sgian dubhs with the stone on top. Geek out, friend. One of these days we'll be saving up for our kilts in "Starfleet" tartan.
One thing that I always thought would look interesting with this type of uniform would be to take the belt buckles that were worn in the movies and add a pin backing to make it into a broach for the plaid. Although it is a strong mixing of eras I think it would work well enough. Oh and Scotty wore his own tartan so as far as we know everyone else could also, there is no need for a Starfleet tartan.
