Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
Cool! I'll start:
When my wife and I were planning our wedding. Middles aged weddings are great. You have (she has) total control over the planning.
MacKay Ancient (my mother is a McKee)
Our wedding, of course.
Everytime I think of how much money I spend, I remember how much fun we had. All the men in the wedding party wore kilts, best man Buchanan, step-son Thompson, usher Black Watch
Very positive
Every chance I get. Hiking in the summer, scouting events (add a MacLaren), feast days at church.

Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
I had enlisted into a Highland regiment, was issued my kilt in Black Watch and wore it on a Rememberance day parade. After the parade I went home and deep sixed my trousers! I have worn kilts consistently for the 20 years since then.

Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
I don't have pictures, sadly, but I can relate my experience anyway.
I've been interested in kilts for about a year now, and after getting one last summer I finally wore it out in public in December.
The kilt was a SWK Economy in Black Watch.
We were picking up my sister from the airport; she had never seen me in a kilt before and I wanted to surprise her.
Before this, I had only worn the kilt around the house and occasionally around the neighborhood while out for a stroll. I had finally gotten proper kilt hose, so I put some effort into an outfit that would look alright with the kilt. It was casual, but I thought it looked good.
My family thinks the kilt is strange, but I'm hardly the strangest member of my family and they have complemented me on how I look in a kilt. Other than that I was met with polite silence at the airport.
Since then I haven't worn a kilt very much. The acrylic fabric of the Economy is a bit underwhelming after a while, but I don't have the money for a wool kilt just yet. I may be wearing my kilt again next month for a steampunk get-together though.

Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
Well my first kilt was worn on stage and it wasn't so much my decision as the designer's. It was a DND Black Watch kilt and was such a comfortable experience though that I always wanted one for myself. I was pointed in this direction a few years ago and things took off for me.

For my first personal kilt I went with a USAK casual. The first time I wore it out was to my SIL's for a family gathering which was met with mixed reactions, mostly good, but the SIL in question was not impressed. No big deal since she's not my biggest fan anyhow.

My first wool kilt was self made in my clan tartan. I wore it around town to great comments and it eventually became my paddling kilt last year. I outshrunk it though and sold it, now I have to sew a new paddling kilt. (I paddle in the Gung Haggis Fat Choy Dragon Boat team). That lead to my kiltmaking obsession and eventually to sewing the kilts for my brother's wedding last year. I get a LOT of compliments.

Now I wear a kilt as often as pants.

Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
Family and friends pooled together and I had a 8yd handsewn made up in Ancient Hunting MacKintosh.
I wore it for the first time at my brothers wedding
I had to ask how to put it on and was quite uncomfortable with it.
Since then, I have steadily increased my frequency and collection.

Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
right.
Since i'm no stimulating enough in my conversations I thought I'd let people know about my first kilt wearing experience.
I grew up in the north east of scotland where we would have chelidhs every other weekend. The local band the tifty cheldih band used to play straight through the night and the adults would drink, dance some strip the willows , the older teens would be out boozing between the cars and the younger of us would be running around in general , using a bouncy castle and trying to get sipps of wine from the drunker adults and blackmailing the older kids to gee us some.
Every so often we would have a special chelidh that would involve the kilts being donned.
My first kilt experience ended up with me getting proogreesivelyy pissed , and thrown by my older brother onto the bouncy castle cushions. balls flying everywhere and **** oout.
Made a few of the girls blush and my mother pulling my spinning head outside and giving me a good talking too.
I have worn kilts with a proud feeling of being well initiated into my heritage since then.

Choice of kilt.
Borrowed a Buchanan hunting kilt from someone at church. Fortunately I have a connection to this tartan -- my paternal g'father's birth mother
The occasion. 1st annual Scotland County (NC) Highland Games -- I was a steward for the piping competition.
Your experience. Being as it was at a Scottish games, I completely blended in, even though I didn't have proper ghillies. It was a hot day, for October, and I was glad for the shade!
The response. Wife thought it looked good; but wasn't 'til subsequent occasion that she decided I had the right build for a kilt ![Cool](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)
Kilt wearing since then. mostly at games & competitions.
Best kilt experience EVER: Getting back from a frustrating experience at a piping competition, in which my registration was lost and I never got to play as the stewards were clueless little boy scouts, I was coming back to my hotel and was stopped by 2 VERY cute Korean girls who wanted to have their picture taken with me! Piping!?? What piping competition?!?

Choice of kilt. Celtic Croft philabeag Robertson tartan
The occasion. Ren Faire
Your experience. positive
The response. Ren Faires are or can be quite loose...a very pretty young lady hollered out she was going to see if I was regimental and proceeded to dive under my kilt...when she came up she was as red as my flashes and quite silent...my wife and I had a very good laugh at her expense
Kilt wearing since then. Since I now own my own business I have decided to go kilting full time, just waiting for all the kilts to come in [Dunbar Ancient, Holyrood, and Spirit of Scotland]

Re: Your first kilt wearing experience
Miserable. Groomsman at an out of state kilted wedding, and the rental company screwed things up. Nobody's kit fit well and the hose were sheer. Soured me until I was invited to LitTrog's wedding last summer and saw that guys could look better than awful in kilts. Got pointed toward this forum and really got turned on to the idea of making my own.
