Perhaps you did. It's certainly an idea, and you others are right, cotton hose would take dye pretty well.

As you probably suspected, that means a viscose fiber made from bamboo. It's pretty good stuff, but I've only had thin socks made from it. I often use them as sock liners, like the expensive polypropylene ones from the camping outfitters.

Acrylic athletic socks are the best bet, followed by almost any knee socks you care for. A good quality acrylic will allow your feet to breathe better than cotton. It can be machine-washed and -dried with impunity (on low or permanent press settings, not too hot).

Or (we always seem to get around to this) knit them yourself, or bribe a knitter, and get custom hose. With acrylic, make them a bit undersize ("negative ease" in the jargon), as they may stretch a bit and will not shrink back to size when washed.
