Re: new ~$200 kilt suggestions?
Hahaha, I was excited to post my decision: a St. Patrick tartan B&S casual. However, they only have it in 10oz wool (I was hoping for 16oz), so I guess it's back to the tartan list.
I am fairly certain that I have decided on wool instead of PV, though.
EDIT:
Clan MacDonald modern tartan is available in 18oz, which could be nice.

I almost pointed that out to you, but I didn't want to unduly sway your decision. There is nothing wrong with lightweight cloth, unless you have your mind already made up to preclude it, and if so, there is nothing wrong with that.
One of my favorite kilts is made from Dalgliesh lightweight cloth. I tend to wear it more often in warmer weather.
At the risk of unduly swaying your decision, ...
I have a B&S casual made from their 18oz Locharron MacDonald tartan. Both the cloth and the kilt are very nice!
If you would like to see pictures of such a kilt, check out the review on the B&S Casual Kilt on Sale web page at ...

There are three pictures of some old codger wearing one. Click on the pictures to enlarge them. Click on the word "original" at the bottom of a picture and it will be enlarged to shockingly enormous proportions.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I don't believe you swayed my decision, so much as hastened my inevitable choice. Provided that I like the picture that they send me of the tartan material, my new kilt will be a B&S casual in 18oz Clan MacDonald modern tartan.

Hate to resurrect an old thread, but this Burnett's & Struth's casual vs USA kilts Semi-traditional is the debate I'm having with myself, so this looked like the best place to post. I'm leaning PV if for no other reason than I rarely darken the door of a dry cleaner, and the ability to throw something in the washer is a winner (I have an eight month old that vomits; I should buy stock in Shout). But oooh, wool...you know? Everyone tells everyone to buy wool, right? So here's a question to anyone who might own both the B&S casual and the USAK semi-trad....which looks better? Does the casual kilt "look" like a casual kilt? I won't be going white tie any time soon, but if I want to wear it to church or to a nice restaurant, I don't want to look like I'm wearing a pub kilt. From what I have read, the semi-trad dresses up nicely, except it's PV, not wool. I've looked at the pics on the B&S website, and I think the kilt looks great, but if anyone has experience with a side-by-side comparison, I'd be interested in hearing it. Thanks!

I have pv kilts, casual wool kilts and a couple of tanks. The USAK semitrad does NOT look like a pub kilt. Put on a nice shirt and tie, and appropriate accessories, and you can go just about anywhere. I have worn a semi trad with a lovat green argyle jacket to a "casual" wedding. Non-kilt wearers can't tell the difference at all, and most kilt wearers can't tell the difference from across the room. With little ones around, the teflon coating on the pv will be a life saver.

I'll chime in and say that just today I picked up a B&S casual wool kilt (in Galbraith Ancient). I've not done much with it yet, but it's a lovely looking kilt thus far. I just removed the basting stitches and it fits just right. I don't think anyone outside of people VERY familiar with formal kilts would be able to tell that it's anything other than a fully formal Scottish kilt.
Looking forward to wearing to a social outing on Friday. I'll try and get some pics and put them up.
EDIT: I thought I'd add that I also owned a Stillwater heavywieght wool, and honestly they're not really the same beast at all. It all comes down to the quality of the wool. While I enjoyed the Stillwater and it's a GREAT deal for what it is, the wool felt more like a heavy burlap sack than true tartan in comparison.

I really like my B&S Black Watch casual. It's wool and looks nice, and I can dress it up or down. I personally prefer wool (not just for kilts). B&S is a great deal. So is the Stillwater heavyweight wool. Don't have one, but will be getting one when I buy another kilt. I also want to get a USAKilts casual in PV, but if I were to only be getting one kilt and only had $200, I'd get a wool B&S again or a Stillwater. PV is going to be washable, so if washing is important, wool probably won't cut it for you.
