Aye -- traditionally rifle & light infantry regiments wore black leather, and the RHR is a regiment of the line, so brown is perfectly acceptable with the Government Sett, as Nervous Jock points out.

I wear my black targe sporran with a chrome cantle over either a Sporrans.com dark, dark brown pebbled kilt belt with chrome waistplate or a black Lee River belt with a Kells-design buckle. For shoes, I wore black Florsheim kiltie loafers for day or evening or James Senior "Jimmy's Fancy" dancer ghillies for evening. For really formal occasions I would wear my white rabbit sporran with black tassels and silver pewter cantle. The darker the brown the better, but the black looks better.

remember that this is truly a military kilt

Cabela’s have some shirts that will go great with the Black Watch kilt. British Tan, Forest, Desert Brush, etc...

Either way you go I think if you remember that this is truly a military kilt then one cannot go wrong. Just look at the Osprey book MEN-AT-ARMS SERIES, The Black Watch, plates E2, F2, and H1-3

I've worn everything from blonde construction boots to brown boots or sneakers with brown belts and sprorrans, but gotta admit that my black leathers look better with my Black Watch. Brown works for casual; the black works either way.

And this shall be for music, when no one else is near; The fine song for singing, the rare song to hear; That only I remember, that only you admire; Of the broad road that stretches and the roadside fire. (RL Stevenson)
