I forgot to say, since you are using the bovine sporran why not get him to use the black leather one that I sent down, I think it would look better than the daywear sporran he is wearing.

I'd second the higher wearing of the kilt as a suggestion. School policy here at present would cause one to be expelled without appeal fora student taking a sgian dubh to school property. Even as an adult, I could be prosecuted for having a knife on school property. I disagree with the policy, but that does not change it.
Before you take sgian dubh to anything school related, double check the policy, please, for your parents sake and your own. And good luck !

Looks good, and as has been previously suggested:
1) wear a three button vest (low cut, and you can buy/rent one from a tux shop or get it from the folks who sold your pal the mess jacket).
2) the kilt should reach to the top of the knee (that's military regs) and the hose should be two inches below the knee (again military regs).
[Since your pal is wearing a military uniform he should try to adhere to mil regs.]
I'd skip the sgian duhb because (a) it might cause problems with the school, and (b) because it will keep sliding down your hose while dancing.
You and your buddy have a great time (and let's see some pics!).

Thanks for the wonderful replies!!!
Ok, first of-
since its a topic of much debate, yes he had a sgain, (a 3 1/3 inch k-bar for a military look) and NO!!!!!!!! under no circumstances will he or I be bringing one to prom. One of my friends was expelled from school about 6 months ago for having a victornox pocket knife in the glove box of his car. My school district has a zero tolerance policy. I won't even risk a dummy one.
now that thats out of the way, Thanks for the constructive words. He just sent me that picture. he just put it all on rather quickly because he just got the kilt in the mail today and he wanted to see what it would look like. I will advise him to wear it higher and wear the hose a tad bit lower. Also, I will let him use the black leather semi-dress sporran that McMurdo sent my way. Along with that, he fits perfect into the PC waste coat I have.
He is working on getting a belt. and the hat will not be worn.

I would suggest wearing either a waistcoat OR a belt, but not both. If he fits in a waistcoat that you already have available, I'd lean that direction.

I've been searching but I can't seem to find anything on the subject. but you mentioned the military uniform requirements. is there a list of Navy specific requirements of kilt wearing? I know he would greatly appreciate that! if not navy specific then US military?
thanks!

the closest I could find is a FAQ pertaining to the UACG pipe band...
http://www.uscgpipeband.org/faq.php
it does reference the US military regs for "special uniform situation"...
thats the best I could find for now... I'll keep digging
