I believe you're thinking of the "Saltire kilt" which is NOT the same an an XMTS tartan kilt. It's a specialty item that many shops source out, and there have been some discussions here over it.

The XMTS tartan kilt does not have the "X" woven into appear across the pleats like the Saltire kilt. The tartan (the background here), in fact, is quite different than the one used for the apron area of the saltire kilt. It can be pleated to the stripe or sett, as most any other tartan. Here's a shot of Ron's pleated to the sett.
