I will wear a kilt to work on Halloween, as I work at a childrens hospital and we all have a costume/dressup day. I would not consider wearing it, along with appropriate daywear attire, as being a costume, anymore than I would if I wore cowboy boots, jeans and a stetson or a full out tuxedo that day to work. These are clothes that I might wear in a more appropriate situation where they would not be considered a costume, so why should they be considered one just becasue it is Halloween. Wearing my kilt that day will be another opportunity to show folks that a kilt can be worn anyday, and look great, even if it is Halloween.

You could literally dress up as a giant shortbread... for Halloween
A giant haggis, maybe...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

As has been pointed out before, "costume" has many meanings. For me, it signifies specialised clothing. If one of my young neighbors comes to my door dressed in a kilt, bonnet and hose, I will not be offended, nor would I be if he came as any other type of dress. I agree that a kilt is not a costume in a very narrow sense, but then so are military uniforms, and I see them every Halloween. Should I be offended if someone dresses up as a Sailor? as a College professor in cap and gown?
I am not looking to be offended, and I won't be. I personally feel that is the crux of the matter. If you are looking to be insulted or offended, then you will be.

I wore the kilt last Halloween with otherwise ordinary clothing. When someone said that they liked my outfit I said "Thank you!" When someone said that they liked my costume I said "What costume?"

Last year I wore my UK and a sweater on October 31st, not because I was dressing up for Halloween, but because that's what I wore to work that day (I had costumes for the weekend days leading up to Halloween). People kept asking me what my costume was, so I told them I was a Scottish Dockers model.
One guy thought I was a Ghillie.

I am kind of a simple guy in the live and let live way of thinking. when I get up in the morning if the first thing I grab is jeans then I put those on and if the first thing is a kilt i put that on. Halloween is no different.
