Well, if the hardware store was the setting for a punchline, the mattress store was more like a sitcom - a little awkward situation helped by a laugh track.
I have had my eye on some new bedroom furniture for a while. But I can't buy it until I figure out whether a queen-sized mattress will make it up my stairway, owing to the configuration of the architecture and other obstacles. So, I decided today to buy one and see.
Which meant actually trying them out.
And not until I did had I given any thought to the challenge of plopping oneself down on a mattress, getting up and sliding off in public without exposing myself to the sales staff who had nothing better to do than to watch me play the part of Goldilocks.
With much sweeping of the pleats, I think I emerged with my dignity intact.

Thanks for the laugh, Rex. Great story!
The older I get, the more I regret not getting to know the religious at my schools a little better. In adulthood, I've come to know a number of priests, brothers and sisters, and they're among the funniest, most interesting people I know.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

Go king size Rex (as indeed your name implies). Dual boxspings, had a devil of a time getting the original twin upstairs, a queen would never have fit but the king and home delivery & set up? I never broke a sweat over my SoCo & 7.

Thanks Rex for the answer. My home has a similar problem its a 1909 Craftsman Sears house. We got the Queen size bed up by standing it on its end and removing the door. The room is small but the bed is wonderful.

I explained the situation to the salesman. He assures me that, given modern mattress construction techniques - seems they no longer have wire frames - the top mattress will squish enough to get through (while I worry whether it will take the plaster with it), but I have ordered the box springs split, and have no worries about that part.

Yeah, I know it's an option. The previous owners had a king sized bed up here, but I don't want to sacrifice the floor space if I don't have to. My home may be my castle, but my castle is small.

Rex.
