    That's a terrific story.

I think I'll go kilted down to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit on the south side of our county and see what the monks have to say. They usually have a great sense of humor as well.

Great story, thanks for sharing. The mental image that it conjures up is fantastic. I have had interesting meetings at Agent Red (Lowes) and Agent Orange (The Home Depot) as well. But this is the topper.

OK, already, that's a great story. Now what about the mattress store?

I did, but not before getting lost among the paint chips, then after the window treatments and encounter with the friar, I had to ask for directions, and was sent to the far end of the store, where there was plenty of spackling and joint compound - buckets of them in fact - but I only wanted about a pint of it to fill some nail holes before painting - so I headed back, admiring the promotionally priced houseplants along the way before ending up exactly where I started: opposite the paint chips there were shelves of pint-sized containers of spackling.

Thus go my trips to the hardware store. It's a miracle I managed to avoid the lighting department and plumbing fixtures.

    Regards,
    Rex.

Well, if the hardware store was the setting for a punchline, the mattress store was more like a sitcom - a little awkward situation helped by a laugh track.

I have had my eye on some new bedroom furniture for a while. But I can't buy it until I figure out whether a queen-sized mattress will make it up my stairway, owing to the configuration of the architecture and other obstacles. So, I decided today to buy one and see.

Which meant actually trying them out.

And not until I did had I given any thought to the challenge of plopping oneself down on a mattress, getting up and sliding off in public without exposing myself to the sales staff who had nothing better to do than to watch me play the part of Goldilocks.

With much sweeping of the pleats, I think I emerged with my dignity intact.

    Regards,
    Rex.

Thanks for the laugh, Rex. Great story!

The older I get, the more I regret not getting to know the religious at my schools a little better. In adulthood, I've come to know a number of priests, brothers and sisters, and they're among the funniest, most interesting people I know.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

    Great story.

And that comes from a man who wears both a kilt and a cassock!

I'm an Eastern Orthodox monk, and because of my particular circumstances, I work a secular job, and I get away with wearing a kilt there. When I wear my cassock, it's about 50/50 whether I'm wearing a kilt underneath, or pyjama pants.
