Now that I think about it, a tartan waistcoat is too much of the same pattern with the kilt.
Patchwork is the method of construction of the outer surface of the waistcoat; it could all be the same color. I was thinking of the patern that the squares of fabric make, so yes, it could be subtle. I seem to have seen a silk waistcoat, with the quilt-like paterns sewn in by contrastingly colored thread, because I have that image stuck in my mind. That probably was not with a kilt.
It really doesn't even matter anymore. Besides, being laughed at is not always so fun. I'm remembering having to often wear bright orange or bright yellow shirts in Highschool and when I first started college because that is all I had. People told me to not stand next to them because my shirt was too yellow etc...
