    What color of hose?

    Hello,

I don't have a lot of money. At the moment, I have no kilt hose. Using my non-existent money, I need to purchase some kilt hose.

I do not like the look of white hose for some reason; I much prefer the look of black. Are black hose acceptable for any occasion? or are the inappropriate for something? are they considered too 'dressy' for extremely casual wear?

    Thank you,
    The_PreacherMan

You could try WB Socks on Ebay
    http://stores.shop.ebay.ca/WB-SOCKS__W0QQ_armrsZ1
Their kilt hose is not expensive and you could have a myriad of colors for less than you would pay for a good pair of Lewis hose. (but I recommend getting that good pair of Lewis hose... 'cause when you've put on a good pair of hose, it's hard to go back...)
No problem with black, but make sure you match it with something.

I would second the recommendation for WBerin as a good source to start out. Black is fine for any level of formality.

A couple of things to consider:

    1) NO ONE in Scotland worries about matching their hose to their kilt, or anything else.
    2) Black hose can be worn anytime, any place. So can virtually any other colour.
    3) Dark green or dark red hose are two possibilities you might want to consider as options to black.
    4) ACBW (Any Colour But White) is probably the best choice if you own fewer than 30 pair of hose.

I just got a pair of these http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/page...ductID_862.php in black, inspired by my wife getting herself a pair. They ain't high end by any stretch of the imagination, but they look really good and are comfortable. I used to also recomend W Bruin, but I like the way these look a whole lot better. The cabling looks much cleaner and more ornate. So for what it's worth, these are where my money will go for nice summer weight hose.

If you wear a kilt woven with modern (strong) colors, then navy blue, dark green, black, red and yellow can be good choices. If your tartan is in the ancient (subdued) colors, then light blue, lovat green and grey can be good choices. The aforementioned black will work just fine, too.

    For the casual moments

If you're looking to acquire durable, inexpensive hose in your area, I would suggest checking out the goods at your local soccer shop. They usually offer plain colored socks with good cushioned support for an affordable price. If you're going to wear your kilt out much, durable hose are a must. Then you can upgrade to intricately woven kilt hose with interesting patterns when you get the feel for things. Also, the patterns don't show as much on black hose, so if you get some pick another color. For the black, a nice quality soccer sock looks the same and even has more cushion for long days.

...And yes, MacMillan is certainly right, Any Colour But White is the best way to look fashionable. I include the cream in that statement. You're Scottish, let the colors fly.

To me, black would be fine for any occasion.

Currently they're extremely popular with civilian pipe bands:

Also becoming more popular are charcoal grey hose. They go well with any kilt and any occasion.
