    Pleated to ...

    ... A MESS!

No wonder the pipe band cancelled their order. Looking at their other sales I see that they make ... TAWSE?!?!? to which all I can say is, ***!?

Pleated to nothing by the looks of it. From what I understand civilian kilts were made that way for a time. The Scottish Tartans Museum has one on display that is pleated to nothing.

I think that Sport Kilt does that as well. They call it pleating to the gather.

The end result doesn't look all that bad to me. With all of the red overcheck it tends to blur the fact that it isn't pleated to anything.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I love creative pleating styles but the stripes on the actual pleats are skewed in weird directions. (especially a green pleat to the right of the center...)

there is even a spot where a prominent red stripe disappears in the tapering. This is an example of how not to pleat.

Good point and thanks for making me go back and look at it again. Yes, I see the skewing that you are talking about and I would have to agree it looks messy.

Another strange thing about the kilt is that it flares - it looks decidedly / \ which isn't at all right for a kilt.

It looks like a good piece of cloth wasted.

    Question

I see items like this all the time. Is it possible to fix it? Just wondering, because that's still cheaper than most could get the materials for. It's way past my level of incompetence either way.

Well. depending on whether or not the pleats are cut out (they often aren't on cheaper kilts.) You may be able to salvage the material to make another kilt.

I might just ask the seller if they can tell or not. I'm a MacDonald but I haven't been too fond of the tartan, but if I can pick up a kilt length for $70 I'll do it.

I'll let you know if it works out.

I'd be really interested in seeing if it could work. Makes one wonder though, is fixing someone else's bad poor work worth the savings? I'm a mechanic and everytime some guy brings in something he had his brother in law "look at" it takes me three times as long to re-do all the stuff he "looked at." I'm wondering if a kilt wouldn't fall into this category.

Yes a kilt would fall into this catagory.

I happen to have more time than money though and for how expensive tartan is I think it would be worth it.
