Did someone have a run-in with the Secret Society of the Proper Way to Wear Kilts?
Great thread, Alan. I got the point quick. In fact this weekend at the Potomac festival, I saw a gentlemen in white socks (as well as several with no socks). But at least we were in kilts.

I think my LIFE is a run in with Secret Society of the Proper Way to Wear Kilts.
Thing is, I clean up just fine. I know when to wear a tie, I bow my head in respect as the National Anthem plays, I own a formal kilt outfit. I'm not colorblind, I can match this piece of kit to that piece of kit. I am entirely capable of matching my hose to the secondary color in my kilt.
Its' just that I have more important things to do with my time than obsess over junk like that....or showing off how totally debonair I am.
I have a very short fuse when some people get on their high horse and make pronouncements that "so-and-so is wrong"...or worse, get snotty and say "only people who would rent a kilt would wear....." thereby demonstrating how superior they are since THEY, of course, don't RENT. So if you want to wear white socks, go right ahead and wear white socks in the full knowledge that LOTS of Scots, including guys that many Scottish men admire for their strength and endurance WEAR WHITE SOCKS. Ditto for a flat cap, or any other piece of kit that you happen to like. Be respectful. Be some sort of aware of what the norms are, sure. But wear what you want. It's YOUR kilt, not theirs.
Wear the kilt with some pride. Wear it with some awareness of what it is. Wear it comfortably. Wear it with an open mind. But BE A MAN in your kilt.
Anyway, get ON with it.

Amen brother!
Sure, you won't ever catch me in white hose, but I don't begrudge a man his choice of wear. On a personal level I fall somewhere into the middle ground in my choices. Sure I'd like a tweed jacket etc (& will when I can afford one). But I have also been known to wear a t-shirt with a kilt as well ( )
All I ask is, like you said, wear it with pride & be respectful too, but rock what you got!

One of my favorite pics from 1927 (note the sweater...can you imagine the flap over that one today?):

You think the flat caps in the last photo are giving Jock nightmares?
Great thread Alan!

I have no bother with a period picture whatsoever. It does demonstrate, precicely, why flat caps are not often worn with the kilt these days in Scotland though!

Nonsense. a kilted gentlemen can do ALL of those things, including being sartorially inclined.
