The problem with tartan pocket squares is that they need to be a really tiny sett or it's neigh impossible to recognize the tartan.

Not necessarily. It`s all in how you fold the square. I tried one out last night. I left quite a bit of material hanging out. IMO, it looked good with having it so pronounced.
As GQ magazine has said for 25+ years, anything goes if you have the confidence to carry it as if it were correct.
