I just got my SWK standard Royal Stewart, and it fits! (I was a bit worried about that since the sizes next to it were out of stock,..)
I still need to check my sons when he gets home, and I'll try a 'dry run' of my costume tonight and get a pic perhaps.

the Halloween thread!
Ahhh... October, the changing leaves, brisk mornings, fall festivals, and the annual "Kilts on Halloween" thread!
You know, The first time I wore a kilt out in public was on 'Halloween dress-up day' at work. I'd recieved my kilt, sporran, hose, and 'Jacobite' shirt all from Sportkilt, only a few days before. I had not found this forum yet, and had a lot of the fears about venturing out the 'first time' that new kilt wearers often express here.
In retrospect I looked woeful, but I figured correctly that Halloween would be a chance to test out kilt wearing without sticking out so much, it gave me the mental excuse I needed to get out there.
Now I agree 100% with the idea that modern kilts are men's clothing and not a costume, but we also imply that the kilt is a versitile garmet that is as at home at a rugby match as it is at a formal ball, so I don't see why kilts can't be part of a costume, just like any other article of clothing. I would imply that the kilt as part of an obvious fantasy costume is not 'de-legitimized' any more than jeans or whatever else you might be wearing is. Most of the general public already already thinks we're nuts for dressing this way outside of Celtic events anyway, seeing you in your faux Braveheart getup on Halloween is not going to change that view one way or the other!
Look at these goofballs at a halloween party last year; Left to right; my wife, our friend Dene, and I.

Dene and I don't wear these outfits other than on Halloween and at Ren Faires! Even though I might wear the same kilts, I see a big difference between my "faire garb" and everyday outfits. I know some folks like to wear those "Jacobite" shirts with kilts, but I don't wear that type of vest or shirt or my renfaire gillie shoes any other time of the year.

Nice!! Congrats! My long plaid should be here today, too. I can't wait to get home and find out.

I just tried out my outfit so far, and aside from my fencing jacket being damn big (I realize it was a size 50, but the kilt is a 40...) it looks about right so far. I'll get pics after i get the tack stitching out and a haircut.
I find it almost odd, the children's kilt has two rows of that stitching, but the standard only has one, but I guess the stitching goes down farther on the standard. The real difficulty is that to be as close as I should for the costume, I won't have a sporran or pockets. And since the jacket goes groin to neck, I won't have an easy way to get to pockets if I had some on a shirt under the costume. Minor inconvenience though.

My plaid did come today. Man, the thing is huge!! It's double width, which really surprised me. My penanular broach is almost too small to hold all the material. It should keep me nice and warm tomorrow. All in all, it was a great purchase, and like everything SWK, worth more than I paid.

I will be going as a mangy Scotch git, but I will not be wearing a kilt (visibly).

It depends on the function and your judgment.
I would not wear my kilt and stuff to a typical alcohol fueled student party (Eve n at St Andrews, we know drunken revelry). $600-1000 worth of worsted wool and tweed doesn't deserve to be soaked in Tennents or vodka-cranberry juice cocktails.
To a milder party, yes. Or to a dance, yes.
This halloween, I have tickets to a "Black Tie Bond" midnight screening of Quantum of Solace [Jame Bond]. Everyone wears black-tie attire, attends a drinks reception, then goes to watch the movie. I am going kilted, obviously.

Ah, yes the yearly thread.
For me because I enjoy wearing kilts for several reasons, I have incorporated the kilt into Halloween costumes, like the year I dressed as a knight. (Funny, nobody asked if I was a Scottish knight). But I also wear kilts regardless so there is a better than average chance it will be what I pulled out of the closet for that day as well.
On the other hand, the bottom line is if I wear a kilt on Halloween it's because that is what I chose to wear that day. If people want to think I'm wearing a costume, that is their mistake to make, those who know me will know I'm not wearing a costume. Either way it's no skin off my back.

I'm not sure we quite share this celebration of the occult on this side of the Atlantic to the same degree but I can see no reason not to wear a kilt on Hallowe'en just like any other day. I do, however, have reservations about the type of Hallowe'en outfits for pet dogs being sold in the Target stores I saw on my last visit to America - and I might say, so did a lot of the locals!
