Currently Own
Scottish National: This was my first kilt. The colors and design isn't too far off from my family tartan and since it is a universal tartan I figured this would be a good start. I was at the Highland games in Dunedin, Florida and a vendor there happened to have my size. Only problem is that it is a Gold Brothers kilt. After getting my second kilt, I realize the difference in quality. Regardless, it is still a good starter kilt which helped to start this addiction.
Black Watch: This is my second kilt, and my favorite between the two. This one is from Stillwater Kilts. I can tell you, Jerry has a customer for life with kilts if he continues to expand his stock of tartans. I love this kilt. The Black Watch is a beautiful tartan and universal, which is another reason why I like it so much.
Future
Galbraith: This is my family tartan. I am looking everywhere for this tartan on a good kilt which is relatively inexpensive. If Stillwater carried this tartan I would definitely place an order for at least two, one for me and one for my father. Not sure if I would go with the Heavyweight though as opposed to the Standard since we live in Florida. Anyways, looks like my best bet is USA Kilts, and they are a bit out of my price range.
Irish National: This is one that Stillwater does have, but I am a bit on the fence. I'm not sure if I have Irish blood in me. After some research, my mother's family may have come from England originally. She swears her father always said Ireland though. Regardless, it is a handsome tartan, and would be perfect for St. Patty's Day when everyone is Irish it seems. LOL.
Any Other Universal Tartans that catch my fancy: I have a thing for the universal tartans. I don't know. It is hard to explain, but something in me tells me to wear only my family's tartan with the exception of the universals.

Best,

I believe you're thinking of the "Saltire kilt" which is NOT the same an an XMTS tartan kilt. It's a specialty item that many shops source out, and there have been some discussions here over it.

The XMTS tartan kilt does not have the "X" woven into appear across the pleats like the Saltire kilt. The tartan (the background here), in fact, is quite different than the one used for the apron area of the saltire kilt. It can be pleated to the stripe or sett, as most any other tartan. Here's a shot of Ron's pleated to the sett.
