That would make an awfully thick hem in a 16-oz fabric, wouldn't it?

I have hemmed a 16 oz. kilt with no problem of thickness. It's actually only three layers of fabric at the thickest. You use a 1" or better blind hem. If done carefully, and by hand, it is almost unnoticable to anyone but a really good kiltmaker.
I think Barb hemmed a couple of run #2 X Marks kilts in 14 oz.

so the fabric is 60 inches wide??? hrmmmm.....and only a few inches are ruined. So if I needed a drop of 23 inches...and my kilt maker has no problem hemming...then even with the mangled bits, I should still be ok then right???
------------------------------------------------------------------
the options:
1- getting the stuff we ordered, torn and all. How many wouldn't mind hemming?
2- navy. It might be nice to look at....but it's not official xmarks. I wouldn't mind navy, but it's not my preference. I don't own any tartan kilt yet and was really hoping this could be my first.
How many folks are ok with the navy? IF there aren't enough for another run...will it cost extra?
3- waiting for more xmarks weathered blue yarns. Jones time is substantially longer but it would be exactly what we have already paid for.
How many prefer this option? Assuming that some will take single widths of the mangled tartan. We won't need as much of the new...however less yardage costs more?
Will F&K make the xmarks tartan a priority once the yarn does come in?
If we all order new, what happens to all the mangled? Seems wasteful to scap it all.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
How does this whole thing play out for F&K? Assuming they sent hundreds of dollars worth of tartan to their finisher...and the finisher ruins it. Does the finisher reimburse F&K for their costly mistake?
If we then buy the mangled stuff for 50% off, then does the weaver stand to make more money selling the mangled stuff than if he were to sell the new?? I'm really really not trying to be rude or presumptious. I just want to know how this will play out for all parties involved.
I'd also really like to hear from the others who ordered fabric. What are your plans??? It might make it easier to come to some sort of decision if this is discussed more.
ANybody want to start some sort of poll?

I'd LOVE to hear Steve's responses to Cloves . . .
There are a NUMBER of options open.
I LIKE navy, mainly because I already HAVE some from a previous run.
IDEALLY, I'd LOVE enough for a normal 4 yard box and a navy 4 yard box.
If everyone else wants weathered/normal X Marks, fine by me.
Let's see what Steve has to say and his response from all the emails he has been bombarded by from the purchasers.

My responses.
First let's all wait till I actually have the fabric in my grubby little hands and I can advise everyone better.
Second. Everyone is correct, the fabric is originally 60" +or-. Even with two or three inches of ruined selvedge you can hem this fabric quite well.
Third. I would prefer to ship exactly what you have ordered and already paid for. If I can get double width pieces from what we have and still be able to get single width pieces for those who are going to join them anyway That's what I'll do.
Fourth. The offer of a color substitution is only that an offer from Gordon. Not enough people have expressed an interest in changing the X Marks Tartan to order a full bolt of a new weave. So for right now I'm going to shelve the Color change.
Fifth. Gordon has assured me that he will do whatever he can to get the fabric we ordered, in the condition we requested, as soon as he can. I trust Gordon as a man of his word and feel confidant that we will have priority the moment the yarn arrives.
Sixth. I'm not sure what or how much fabric will remain after I cut each persons order. As for selling it --- Well, actually it's already been paid for. By those who placed their orders, and have been waiting patiently for their fabric.
I'll do my best to fill as many orders as I can with the fabric we have. When all is said and done and the new weave is cut and shipped I'll check with everyone about any scraps that may be left over.
No one needs to order more fabric. No one needs to think that you will not get EXACTLY what you ordered and are expecting.
If some don't mind receiving a single width piece of fabric that totals the amount you ordered then that gives me a little room to try to create this cutting puzzle I have on my hands.
If some of you don't mind hemming your kilts then the puzzle gets that much easier. And you will get your fabric that much sooner.
I thank those who have offered to wait for the next weaving. You just made my job that much easier.
Bottom line. Let's wait till I have the fabric in my hands and can see how well we can do. In short "Don't sweat the small stuff. And if it can't kill you, it's small stuff."
Anybody want to bring their tape measures and scissors and don't mind camping out under the cutting table for about a week?

Thank you for the update Steve. To reiterate my choice, I can live with a single width, but I can also wait until the reweave!
