Re: Hose Color Questions
I used to be able to buy stuff called "woven woollen tape" - in effect a 1" wide woollen ribbon. Generally it came in black, but that didn't matter as it would be hidden by the hose turn-over. I would then buy wool in the colour I wanted and make a tassel of it. Make four the same size and stitch one one the end of each garter. As long as the cuff turn-over covers the join, no one will be the wiser.
Here's an example, at Canada Day in London:

As it happens, I am using two colours here - black and yellow.
The problem is my supplier no longer stocks the woollen tape, so I am searching the country for a new source.

Chas

Re: Hose Color Questions
Personally, I feel that a hose color "temperature" goes better than the actual color when matched with the kilt. For example, bold hose colors with modern or loud tartans, and subdued earth-tones with ancient and weathered tartans.
I have two tartans I mostly wear, Caledonia and Davidson Ancient.
I have TONS of different color hose, Bright "Pumpkin" Orange, Bright "Denim" Blue, Marled Oatmeal, Marled Olive, Black, and a cable-knit pseudo-marled Bottle Green.
Of those, I might wear all but the oatmeal, olive, and bottle green with the Caledonia. I much prefer the Orange hose with the Caledonia (even though the Modern really has no Orange in it)

I would not wear the Orange with the Davidson, and usually gravitate towards the earthier tones with it. At Burns Dinner this year I wore the Bottle Green hose:

There are exceptions. The bright denim blue hose I'll wear with either...

That tassle trick with the ends of the garters is a pretty neat trick.
As to hose colors, I think Kyle covered every color known to man, some of which are not even found in Nature. Ha.
Presonally, I steer clear of black or gray because they just look a bit, oh, I don't know . . . boring! So I nearly always wear:
1. lovat green with red flashes or garters'
2. lovat blue with red
3. Red with navy garters
4.navy with red
5. tartan for really dressy.
I do have a pair of very light weight khaki for very casual summer wear.

Re: Hose Color Questions
I did not bother to read any of the other posts. I didn't really need to. What you do is, develop your own sense of what looks good. You don't really need to "match" your tartan, so long as what you wear looks good to your eyes. For example, I have a Nightstalker tartan kilt from Stillwater Kilts. It's black and grey. I wear bright red hose with it, and sometimes purple. That doesn't match- at all- but I like it. On the other hand, I have a kilt that is in the Colorado state tartan. It's got some forest green in it. I wear forest green hose- not because they match, but because the green really makes the tartan pop. It all comes down to your own sense of style- or lack thereof.
Oh, and the one other comment that I would make- ditch the white hose. Even for formal. They look cheap, no matter the circumstance. Colored hose look so much more thoughtful, regardless of the situation. White just looks garish to my eyes. (This is all personal opinion. Keep that in mind!)

Re: Hose Color Questions
Kilted Karl If you don't like your white/cream hose any more and they are of a wool or primarily wool constuction you can always dye them with tea or coffee. I have dyed several wool ones with good results. It's a lot cheaper than buying new ones and you are recycling what you have.
Here are a few I've done

Very Interesting! I had not thought of that. But I do use those hose for other things though, like knickers

Thank you all for your advice. I like the blue as well.

Sorry, off topic but what measurements did you use for the dark coffee hose. They look great. I have an ecru wool pair that I don't wear that I might as well try dyeing.

Re: Hose Color Questions
Oatmeal is not just for breakfast...it will pretty well go with any kilt out there. The comments about being too matchy are spot on. The blue looks great...
