I don't think a dress tartan is ever really appropriate, except for ladies and Highland dancers
This is simply not true. See the thread going on in Tartans and Heraldry.

However, IMHO, a proper dress tartan (I'm not referring to the clan fashion tartans that are very common in the dance world now), with a white background would be more equated to black or white tie formal attire. If this is the type of attire you would be expected to wear at a funeral, then I would imagine that a dress tartan is acceptable. I can't imagine however, that the funeral you're attending is this type of occasion, so I'd follow the advice already given.

I just wanted to clarify......my initial post was not about weather to wear a kilt or not. I was always going to attend this funeral kilted. As the owner of multiple Tartans I was wondering if the a dress tartan would be an inappropriate choice.

    Just as an update...
I wore my Clan Tartan to both the Visitation and the funeral. Ultimately I felt that the darker pattern conveyed the proper amount of respect. The variation of tartan at the funeral was breathtaking. The pipes were played and the whiskey flowed. My friend will be sorely missed, but we sent him on his way in style.

Thanks for the update. Glad to know it was a joyous occasion in its way.

I was at a funeral in Dunvegan, Skye about eleven years ago, and was suprised not to see a single kilt. Dark suits one and all. Gaelic spoken. I think that was a shame; perhaps it took extra effort and confidence to go kilted; or perhaps they had become just too expensive .
