Re: Hose Color Questions
Based on my personal preferences, and all the input given above, I suggest that your hose either match, blend, tone, or contrast with your kilt. The most important criterion is that you like the color, ... even white.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Re: Hose Color Questions
Here's another example of the same thing. To my eye the tartan hose (and charcoal grey hose on the far left) are neutral, neither weakening nor strengthening the kilt. But the seafoam green plain hose of the gent second from left, and light grey plain hose of the gent third from left, drains those colours out of their respective kilts, weakening the kilts.
I'm glad you said that, Richard, and exactly in those terms. When I first delved into coloured hose, I attempted to match my hose choices to the tartan. But over time, I came to exactly the same conclusion. Wearing Lovat blue hose with my primarily blue/green tartan was doing nothing but draining the colour from my kilt. It does indeed seem to weaken the kilt's visual importance. Especially when the hose are a 'blended' hue from various colours in the tartan.
Nowadays, I'm trying to take the Jock Scot approach (blessings on him!) and don't give a thought to trying to get "matchy-matchy" with it. And I think it works much better. In fact, wearing hose of a colour which have absolutely nothing to do with the tartan or anything else in one's outfit can look great. So long as it's not garish or in complete contrast, it makes things interesting.
For example, dark blue shirt, with kilt in shades of green with white, and brown hose. Some may disagree, but I think it works just fine.

In fact, I'm really turning into a big fan of browns and olive greens for hose, regardless of what's worn above it.

Re: Hose Color Questions
I think any colour is allowed when you like it. IMHO i like muted coloured hoses for my wheatherd tartan. Lovat blue, dark gray or black hoses with brown flashes is my personal favorit.
But the blue hose is right and looks good

Agreed, and I am the same way. However, I have become a huge fan of coquet or 'diced' top hose for day attire, just as HRH Prince Charles wears. I am quite pleased to have found a reputable company, which provides such hose in an endless array of colours.
Cheers,

Re: Hose Color Questions
OC Richard; I just checked out the site you mentioned and, like you, like some of the items shown. BUT..... in checking their postage fees it appears that postage to the U.S. starts at 30 pounds sterling.
Have you ordered from this site, and if so, is that fee correct?

Try Almost Unwearoutable. Note - these hose are indeed fully-fashioned, and made to your measurments - hence the expense - around $100 a pair to include shipping to the US.
