Speaking at the High School
A friend of mine has a son that is a senior in High School and a member of their Diversity Club. Apparently, they wanted someone to speak on Scotland/Scottish Culture/Celtic culture this year and where having a hard time finding anyone and he mention to his teacher that he could ask me. So, I gathered some notes on the history of Scotland, some Scots Gaelic notes and figured out what I could say in the half hour time slots afforded for each session. The teacher called me and explained that while the person they got last year was very knowledgeable, he wasn't real dynamic. I decided that I free from it based on questions and feed back I got from the kids. I wore my USAKilts Hay Semi-traditional for the occassion and headed off to the High School yesterday morning. The teacher was thrilled I had my kilt (I think Josh told her I wear it almost all the time) and was escorted to my class. Kids were great and I only had to threaten to read from my notes a couple times to get them to open up. Afterwards, there was a brunch mixer thing for all the presenters. Rocky, one of the other presenters now has a card for ordering a kilt. The highlight was when one of the teachers came over and said, "you should have been in our fashion show; you look great. The guy we had modeling the kilt looked too uncomfortable and you look like you wear yours everyday." I told her, "Unless I'm at work in my suit or in the workshop at home, I do wear a kilt everyday." Her response: "It shows. You look great." It was a fun way to start my day.
If they outlaw guns, can we go back to using swords?
