How often do you clean your kilt?
I took some kilts to the dry cleaners today and winced when they gave me a quote. Just curious, how often do you take your wool kilts to the dry cleaners?

Never. Chemicals are bad for wool. Besides I like to know that the crud in my kilts is my crud and not a hundred other peoples mixed with toxins.

Never had a wool kilt cleaned. So my answer would be about as often as a Hell's Angel washes his colors.
Wash my USA Kilts from time to time if needed, but that's not often.
Used to wash my Utilikilts fairly regularly when I was out hiking in them and getting them dirty and sandy.
I do wash my kilt hose after every wearing...

I tried Googling this very subject and came across something called Dryel for dry cleaning at home. My missus says it's been good in her limited (but not recent) experience and I haven't found any negative reports on it yet. Might be worth trying out, especially as the price is a fraction of a Dry Cleaner's

Never Dry clean - always wash by hand and hang to dry then press by hand it is not hard just a little time consuming, oh and use a damp towel to press. Not like a true Scot more often than when they stand in the corner:crap:

My real answer (not in the listed ones) is "when it need to be cleaned".
It could be every few months, twice a year, or more or less frequently: it depends on how many time I wear it.
I have 6 kilts now and I don't wear everyone of them with the same frequency!

This is what I do when my kilts need a cleaning and it's worked quite well for me.

Actually they have rules about keeping their colors clean (not like the good ol' days of the 60's).
Don't ask how I know

With 24 kilts (OK not all of them are wool ) they don't get cruddy that quickly.
Have bought some woolite and will try mbhandy's method when I think a wool kilt is due. I don't have any dry cleaners close to me here in my valleys redoubt in any case.
I did have my first kilt dry cleaned many years ago when I lived in Bristol and don't recall it suffering any ill effects. I remember they had to charge it as "a ladies' pleated skirt" though.
