    kilt pin question

I understand the function of the kilt pin is just as a weight. I've seen and rented fancy sword shaped kilt pins as well as all kinds of variations...from battle axes to rampant lions and thistles. All of them have a thin wire pin--the part that actually pierces the fabric of the kilt.

Then there's the old safety pin type kilt pin that the military uses. I have several of these and put off buying a kilt pin figuring I would use one of them. But examining them both, the pin part is probably four times as thick as the more ornamental kilt pins. I am a bit hesitant to jab one of these in my brand new tank. I would suspect that once I do the holes will never close back up and I'll never be able to use another type. Any advice, or thoughts on this concern would be appreciated.

Oh, BTW...one other question--if I do go with the safety pin type, is the head worn up or down?

The best thing for your kilt is to buy a pin for each kilt, attach it and leave it in place. Adding and removing a pin adds wear and tear to the kilt fabric, so most people just leave the pin on the kilt as long as possible. And, the safety pin style pin is worn with the head down.. just in case the pin comes unlatched, there's less of a chance of it falling out of the kilt.

    Thanks.

I actually like the safety pin type as it seems a bit less "fru-fru." But I wouldn't hesitate to wear a more ornamental pin if I could find one I liked--like a rampant boar or boar's head or a even a nice, simple battle axe. Swords are a little boring.

Yup, another branch of the addicition for sure...a kilt pin for every kilt does save wear and tear on the kilt fabric.

Its also a good idea to cut a short piece of wide rubber band (some folks use a round eraser) and run it through the pin once behind the apron. That way if the pin does become unlatched (they do sometimes) you'll not lose the kilt pin.

Kilt pin hunting/collecting is fun. The only offset to the costs.

I've come to like the sword kilt pins worn at a 45 degree angle, as if they were slung on a sword belt. Still paying attention to what, if any, effect there is on the fabric.

Haven't done it yet, but do like the look of multiple pins up the fringe edge of the kilt apron.

And rosettes...maybe some day a couple rosettes for my saffron kilt...

    Play, enjoy.

Nice tip, thanks. There should be a "Tips & Tricks" thread with this added (hint hint).

Head down. Here's a link to buy one, with a picture of it on the kilt. ("only" $108 for a safety pin?)

Silver costs more than chrome plate brass. That said, used they run about $35-$50. Shop around would be my advice.
