hose deformation

I got a nice pair of Locharron wool blend kilt hose for xmas and now they are two different sizes!

Normally I wash my own hose and follow preventative measure to keep them from shrinking/stretching. No problem. Recently, however, someone else washed them for me... big mistake.

Any recommendations on how to even the sizes back out?

Its been my experience that the only thing to do now is to donate them to your local thrift store so some little girl can use them to keep her legs warm.

Time to order a replacement pair.

Sorry...kinda like the cucumber - once its pickled it'll never be a cucumber again...

Put a heavy weight on the end and hang it up for awhile. I did it, and it workd A-OK for me!

When I recently ordered a similar pair of hose (from the STM during their SNOW sale) I found that one of my oatmeal hose seemed much larger (ie came up higher and fit looser) than the other. I contacted the merchant (Matt) and arranged for an exchange. While i still haven't received the new hose, I hope this solves my problem. This was, of course, before I laundered the hose at all.

That is a little odd but I'm sure Matt will sort you out.

Mine were the same size before they were laundered though, so there's no hope of returning them

I'm not always good matching up X Marks names and real names, but I know we just sent out a pair of oatmeal colored hose for an exchange last week. Hopefully those were yours and they are on their way to you. If you don't get your exchange soon, email me and let me know.

One of the oddest "hose washing incidents" I saw was many years ago when our Pipe Major took his hose out of the wash and they had entirely changed shape, becoming very narrow and twice as long!

Each one was a yard long, and big around as your wrist.

Thanks, Matt! I appreciate the great customer service. I've always been real pleased with the Lochcarron hose so I was surprised to find a problem. I hope the OP finds a method of evening his out again.

It might be possible to stretch the smaller one, it sounds as though it was shrunk, perhaps by being washed hotter, or with more agitation than the other one.

Try wetting it in warm water and pour on hair conditioner, work it through the whole hose, then compare it with the other one and pull it longer, stretch it on your fist, or whatever is required to restore the size.

Don't be alarmed if you hear small popping sounds, that is the fibres coming unshrunk - but they should be small sounds, don't be too hasty, several tugs not one great heave works best.

Rinse out the conditioner in warm water, several rinses will probably be required, so be careful they are at the same temperature or all your stretching will be undone.
