Next project - glues?
Ok, I've not quite completed my son's sporran for Xmas as I'm trying to get some thinner leather for the tassels, and I've now started on a dress sporran for myself as I found some 'silver fox' acrylic fur in the material box this morning.
What's the best glue for sticking the fur to the leather body?
Most of the ones I've seen mentioned seem to be only available in the US.
I have some contact adhesive, but not sure how suitable that would be...
I will be posting pics one I've finished it, and yes, My name is Martin and I'm a DIY-a-holic!

Yes, many glues you see featured on leather crafting sites will not be available in the UK/EU for their VoC content.
Any permanent, flexible contact cement should do fine for you using the acrylic fur. If you move on to real pelts you may need to be a bit more careful in your selection.
Remember, pix when you're finished, or it doesn't count ![Rulz](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/Rulz.gif)

Thanks.
As I said, I'll be posting pics once its finished.
Cut the back and front, made the tassels, so just need to cut the fur, make the gusset, stitch, etc, etc, etc...

Re: Next project - glues?
Can you get plain old white Elmer's glue there in the UK? It is actually a very good glue for leather and wood.

Re: Next project - glues?
Never heard of it, but it sounds like it could be a PVA type glue.

You're correct Elmer's is a PVA.

Re: Next project - glues?
I worked with a saddle maker for a bit and he swore by rubber(contact) cement. He would put a thin layer on both pieces meant to be glued and let them dry up until tacky and apply pressure and I've never seen any of it come apart.. even the soles of boots! Hope this helps mate

My wife also works at a saddle shop, and I've helped on many occasions. But I'm confused by your statement. Rubber cement and contact cement are two different products.
With that said, though, they do the same thing you're talking about. They 'rough up' the leather with a hand-held wire brush to ensure lots of contact area, then they apply the cement to both pieces and let it get tacky (or even completely dry). Then, when they're pressed together, they are not coming apart. I've only seen this done as a precursor to stitching or other means of mechanically binding them, though, so whether the cement itself will hold any sort of load, I wot not. But it's a very good method.
Sadly, though, I'm betting this may be one of the products he can't get in the UK. Based on the harsh fumes emanating from the can of cement, it's probably got VOCs out the proverbial wazoo.

I don't want to derail the convo, but can I just ask really quick why the US is pro-VOC if they are harmful to ones health?
