Why fur for formal sporrans?

I wouldn't mind seeing what a velvet sporran looks like. Despite black velvet's negative association with "Elvis," it may look pretty classy.

I don't seem to be able to get the search function to work, or I would look it up and post a link to MOR's description.

Anyway, I remember him saying it appeared to be velvet over a hard shell with a silver cantle. I do not remember if he said it had tassels.

* It may have been dark green, as well, but I'm not too sure about that.

I've always assumed that on top of everything there was a socio-economic equation at work, something like: fur = expensive = formal.

Personally, I prefer a sporran that is made from only part of a large animal as opposed to one that is entirely made from a single animal (or several). I guess it's a moral thing, in my eyes, certainly not one that I would impose on anyone else however. In fact I guess it's a Buddhist sort of thing- but I felt the same way long before I knew that.
